Review by Geri Smith-Cox

The album Missa LHomme Armé Sexti Toni Chansons by Josquin Desprez Ensemble Obsidienne, Direction Emmanuel Bonnardot is a stunning masterpiece of Renaissance music. The ensemble has done an excellent job in capturing the essence of the era and bringing it to life with their performance. The clarity and precision of their singing are commendable, and the direction of Emmanuel Bonnardot is impeccable.

The album features a selection of six chansons by Josquin Desprez, followed by the titular Missa LHomme Armé Sexti Toni. The chansons are beautifully rendered, with each voice blending seamlessly into the whole. The harmonies are intricate and complex, yet the ensemble manages to make them sound effortless.

The Missa LHomme Armé Sexti Toni is the highlight of the album, and the ensemble does justice to this iconic piece of music. The mass is divided into six sections, each of which is sung with great passion and skill. The ensemble's ability to convey the emotional depth of the music is truly remarkable.

About Josquin Desprez Ensemble Obsidienne , Direction Emmanuel Bonnardot

Josquin Des Prés (also found as Josquin des Prez, Desprez, Des Prez, etc), and often referred to simply as Josquin, was a Hainaut composer of the Franco-Flemish School of Polyphony. Josquin (derived from the Flemish "Josken") was renowned as a singer, composer and educator. Characteristic of his music are the great transparency and the tight structure, in which the music closely matches the text. In the chanson, in the mid-15th century, he was the main exponent of a new style in which the techniques of canon and counterpoint were applied to secular songs. He has been called the most important composer of the entire Renaissance and worked mainly in France and Italy. Born: c. 1450/1455, in the County of Hainaut (i.e. the present-day Belgium) Died: 1521-08-27 (Condé-sur-l'Escaut, France).
