Review by Tom McKinney

Jamaica To Toronto Soul Funk Reggae 1967 1974 by Various is a fantastic album that showcases the best of Jamaican music from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. The album features a diverse range of artists and styles, including soul, funk, and reggae, all of which are united by a shared passion for rhythm and groove.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Soulful Strut" by Jackie Mittoo, which is a funky instrumental that perfectly captures the spirit of the era. Other highlights include "I'm Your Puppet" by Ken Boothe, which is a soulful ballad that showcases Boothe's powerful vocals, and "Give Me Love" by Freddie McKay, which is a reggae classic that will get your feet tapping.

The tune "I Wish it Would Rain," was performed as a duet. It was sung by Jackie Richardson, one of Canada's highly regarded stars of Jazz, Gospel, and Blues, alongside dynamic performing vocalist Jay Douglas, who recently reinterpreted Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" with a fresh reggae beat..Back in the late 60s and early 70s, The Cougars band tore up the R&B circuit on Yonge St, Toronto, and were a well known group in the Montreal and Quebec night club haunts as well. Mainly based in Toronto, the group was comprised of musicians from Jamaica.

mangledinal - these Cougars are not the Bristol Cougars, they're another short-lived band, but based in Toronto, Canada in the 1970s

The Cougars were a short-lived band, formed in Bristol, England, in 1961. They had a modest UK hit that year with the single, "Saturday Nite at the Duck-Pond

Wow. Just heard The Temptations original version on a movie soundtrack, then read how the song was written by Roger Penzebone, who wrote it after discovering his wife was cheating on him and killed himself New Year's Eve of 1967. I really like The Cougars' version now, too. A song for singers who got chops and know how and when to use them. Thanks for posting.
