The Stems - The Stems

Review by Chuck Franks

The Stems' self-titled album is a refreshing blast from the past that showcases the band's knack for crafting catchy garage rock tunes. With its fuzzy guitars, driving beats, and infectious hooks, the album channels the raw energy and DIY spirit of '60s garage bands like The Sonics and The Seeds.

From the opening riff of "At First Sight" to the closing notes of "She's A Monster", the album is a non-stop barrage of high-octane rockers that will have listeners tapping their toes and nodding their heads in approval. Standout tracks like "Make You Mine" and "Love Will Grow" showcase the band's ability to write memorable melodies and sing-along choruses that stick in your head for days.

The Stems' sound is unapologetically retro, but it never feels like a mere nostalgia trip. Instead, the band infuses their music with a sense of urgency and passion that makes it feel fresh and vital. The production is raw and gritty, giving the songs a sense of immediacy that captures the energy of the band's live shows.

The Psych rock scene only hit the US in around 2010 with bands like Black Angels and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Shows you how far ahead of the curve Aussie surf bands were
