The Pretenders - In Montreux

Review by Frank Martin

In Montreux is a live album by the Pretenders that captures the band's performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 1986. The album features a mix of songs from the band's early years, as well as tracks from their then-recent album, Get Close.

The album opens with a spirited rendition of "Middle of the Road" that sets the tone for the rest of the set. Lead singer Chrissie Hynde's vocals are as strong as ever, and the band's tight musicianship is on full display throughout the album.

Highlights include a rollicking version of "Message of Love," a haunting rendition of "Hymn to Her," and a blistering take on "Tattooed Love Boys." The band also covers the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing" and the Ray Davies-penned "I Go to Sleep," both of which are given the Pretenders' signature sound.
