Powell - Insomniac

Review by Subasta Segura

Powell's Insomniac album is a dynamic and electrifying work that showcases the artist's range and depth. With its pulsing beats, intricate rhythms, and edgy soundscapes, this album is a tour de force of experimental electronic music.

From the opening track "Fizz," which features a frenetic beat and layers of distorted synths, to the haunting "Sulk," which builds to a crescendo of glitchy percussion and eerie melodies, Insomniac is a masterful exploration of the possibilities of electronic music.

Other standout tracks include "Blobs," a propulsive and hypnotic track that gradually builds in intensity, and "Her Face," a brooding and atmospheric piece that features ethereal vocals and an intricate web of sonic textures.

Oscar Powell, who goes by his last name Powell, is a British electronic musician, composer and producer based in London. He co-founded label with in 2011 and established multimedia audio-visual platform. From November 2013 to June 2019, Powell hosted a monthly online show, Melon Magic, on . In his recent works, Oscar Powell departed from experimentations with techno and other "dance" genres toward more abstract and conceptual music. He searches for inspiration in systems theory, mathematics, ' stochastic processes, Deleuzian philosophy, and imitating natural phenomena in composition and synthesis. In 2011, Powell presented his debut 12" EP on a newly-launched label . In 2013, Oscar Powell had more 12" records on other labels, including and 's limited edition imprint . Powell began gaining prominence for his highly-unusual DJ/live performances. In May 2014, Diagonal Records had a room at the "Leitmotif 002" event, organized at London's . Five DJ sets by the label's artists were later documented on Diagonal Rave Tapes 5xCassette boxset from the label. Powell began extensively collaborating and performing with other artists, including , and . In early 2015, Powell got signed by , starting with a release of 12". His second single, , contained a sample of introducing a song from 's '92 album. When Powell contacted Albini to request the sample clearance, he received a disgruntled email from Steve, stating he always "detested mechanized dance music and its stupid simplicity." He provided Powell blanket permission to sample anything, stressing he couldn't possibly care less and further ranting about his hatred towards this kind of electronic music. Powell asked permission to use the said email for promotion, and Albini granted it with yet another remark, "still don't care." Finally, XL Recordings rented a massive billboard on Commercial Street in London and printed Albini's entire email to advertise Powell's single, generating notable publicity. In October 2016, Oscar's debut full-length 2xLP/CD album, , came out. The artist continued releasing music on and celebrated the label's fifth anniversary in 2016 by performing across North America with and . In 2018, Powell began working together and playing live with German artist . They released a limited edition 12" EP at XL Recordings. In May 2020, Powell launched his new ambitious project, a multimedia cross-genre platform , in collaboration with Swiss filmmaker , Norwegian visual artist and veteran cross-disciplinary artist from Austria. Oscar Powell released two full-length albums and several AV works on the platform. In July 2021, Powell got signed by and released his next album, CD/LP. Oscar Powell devised a new compositional method, applying stochastic functions not just to control sound variables ("wave-shapes," FM parameters, frequency or filter modes) but to generate visual scores compatible with any software/MIDI instrument. He used a generic Grand Steinway sampler as a "placeholder" instrument, eventually building seven distinct "synthetic piano" compositions around these sounds.

Fucking based.

Maybe it seems a little harsh, but given the list of music he was into from the outset, I totally can see how what evolved from and came after could seem like watered-down, shallow sell-out by comparison.

Anytime something about Steve Albini dogging something surfaces, I remember how wrong he was about the back story of "Jordan, Minnesota". He's just a guy.

"The brand new video from 4th october 2016 is much better, in fact it's fucking wonderful."

All Powell's stuff is dull as dishwater, empty vacuous shite, coming across as a charlatan with a completely misguided sense of its own importance. This track and the mini hoopla around this conversation exemplifies that. Even though I like club culture, ultimately I believe the joke is on Powell here.

Albini is so right: clubbing "culture" is based mostly on people with no idea of music, that only enjoys ripetitive sounds over drugs and during their life are dull and un-inspired and blindly following temporary fads. Not the same thing with punk or any other musical "scene".

I'm too high for this right now.
