Review by Jill Richards

Unspeakable, the 2004 album by Bill Frisell, is a mesmerizing and unforgettable work of art. The album showcases Frisell's signature blend of jazz, blues, and country music, and features an impressive lineup of musicians, including drummer Kenny Wollesen, bassist Tony Scherr, and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz.

From the opening track, "1968," to the closing number, "Shenandoah," Unspeakable takes listeners on a journey through a range of emotions and musical styles. Frisell's guitar work is both intricate and soulful, with each note resonating with power and meaning.

One standout track is "Out of Body," which features a haunting melody and a driving beat that builds to a powerful crescendo. Another highlight is "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing," a beautiful ballad that showcases Frisell's delicate touch and emotional depth.

@crantonphos Listen to Naked City's 'Radio' if you want an easy starter!

@iwanttowatchsomethin Nefertiti was released in '68 and you can hear a lot of that in this song. More importantly though I think Frisell is trying to capture the spirit of the era - student movements and social uprisings around the world, the DNC in Chicago, the heyday of the counterculture. '68 was a pretty hip year.

Well, this does sound a bit like In A Silent Way...

Fantastic B. Frisell & group. Thank you.

You're missing the subtle contours of the melody, soaring above the ethereal backdrop of Frisell's guitar.

Listen to the melody as a jazz listener, and you hear a beautiful melody that could be to a standard, given the proper accompaniment and chords beneath. Instead Frisell flips it on its head, and employs a groove background for his melody.

Glad Bill is getting away from the Americana bag he was in for too long. Now if he could just remember that it's OK for a song to have some changes . . .
