Review by Mehmet Turan Felek

Wapassou's album Salammbô is a masterpiece that takes the listener on a journey through time and space. The band's fusion of progressive rock, classical music, and world music creates a unique sound that is both captivating and mesmerizing.

The album's opening track, "Messe en Ré Mineur," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its haunting melodies and intricate instrumentation. The use of traditional instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy and the bouzouki adds an authentic touch to the music.

The title track, "Salammbô," is a standout with its driving rhythm and soaring vocals. The song's lyrics are inspired by Gustave Flaubert's novel of the same name, and the band does an excellent job of capturing the book's essence.

Other highlights include "Odysseus," a tribute to the legendary Greek hero, and "La Suite," a stunning instrumental piece that showcases the band's musical prowess.

About Wapassou

Unique symphonic / progressive rock band from Strasbourg, France, established in the early 1970's. Their obscure eponymous debut LP was more psychedelic flavoured, akin to Catharsis. After that they made a trilogy of albums, all involving long complex suites with guitar, violin, keyboards and female voice, exploring a mystical, classical hybrid all of their own, especially unusual for the lack of percussion. Further albums into the 80's were different again, blending pop and modern neo-prog styles.
