Yikes... dude... Country/Blues and Jazz are closely related! None other than Louis Armstrong recorded with Jimmie Rodgers the father of country music.
He's like a tiny Al Hirt.
The clarinet player is the late "Pee Wee" Spitelera. I went to New Orleans in 1979 specifically to see him play "Send In The Clowns" with Al Hirt's Band at Al's club there. He sat at my table for about a half hour before going on-stage for the show. After the show, he invited me to join Al and the rest of the band to a private gathering in the club and "Jumbo" was awesome ! They autographed an LP of theirs that I brought with me and I will cherish that evening forever !
Al does a mean Green Hornet theme better than the Kill Bill version.
From 1959 to 1979 Al Hirt was one of the most visible instrumentalists in the world constantly on TV shows and appearances and the radio air ways were full of his many songs that were popular to all music lovers. Even in the back woods of North Georgia all of my family had Al HIRT recordings as well as Floyd Crammer,Boots Randolph,Danny Davis and the Nahville Brass.All were considered main stream artists in that era.
I'm stunned to read that this person doesn't know who Al Hirt is! That actually is unbelievable! How do you miss the string of hits the man has had?! Oh well... I'm clueless about a lot of C&W performers, so I gues it balances out. Stil... Al Hirt was a HUGE success! He even appeared in films, particularly a great scene in "Rome Adventure".
Totally in awe of Al Hirt. But this is a goofy, goofy, goofy tune.
Better musicianship than most of what they had on this show, I'm sure...
Al Hirt passed away on this date in 1998 at age 76. {Apr. 27th}
May he R.I.P.

i think it's Pee Wee Stielera? Worked with Hirt on all the albums. I've never seen him before; though.
this is as wonderful as it gets on the trumpet. Jumbo was amazing and a true original. A sweet guy as well. He was the reason I changed form the clarinet to the trumpet when I was 10. Watching the great Pete Fountain I was in awe, then Al Hirt played and I threw the clarinet on the couch and learned the trumpet.
pretty slick!
Is tha Pete Fountain on clarinet looking like the Friendly Giant?
@dbersch Uhm... you're welcome?
You don't know who Al Hirt is? Was Johnny Cash the only music you had to listen to under the rock you grew up under?
Rodrigo Saenz on bass and Paul Ferrara on drums
Yep, "Jumbo" as Al's millions of fans called him, was a GIANT in many ways back in the '60s. Who is that Johnny Cash fella though? LOL
Two true legends indeed! Al inspired me to take up the trumpet in '61 and I'm still going strong today!

Pete Fountain would have LOVED to sound anywhere like Pee Wee, a man with one of the most amazing clarinet sounds I ever heard, yes, including Benny Goodman. Too bad he spent his most productive years in the shadow of Al Hirt.
There is nobody around today that could approximate Pee Wee's sound. I know so because I played in Al's band for two years. Yes, that's me Rodrigo Saenz, on bass

Clarinetist Pee Wee Spitilera was a protoge of Pete Fountain - he sounds almost exactly like Pete. Pee Wee was in the "Little Band" on the Lawrence Welk show (1958 & 59) EVERY WEEK for 2 years playing clarinet & baritone saxophone. After Welk he joined Al Hirt.
pee wee on clarinet, joe prajean on bone, ronnie dupont on piano
The duet is I Walk the Line. The first song by Al Hirt and his band is a very fast version of the country song Louisiana Man. The second song by Al Hirt and his band is an extremely fast version of the classic Jelly Roll Morton dixieland song Wolverine Blues. Abargle, I am one of those Al Hirt fans, and so thank you thank you thank you for posting this!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
