Review by Shannon Payne

The album Piano Concerto No 5 Emperor by Zubin Mehta Radu Lupu, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Beethoven, is an exceptional musical masterpiece that features some of the most talented musicians of our time. The album is a perfect blend of classical music and contemporary arrangements, which makes it a must-have for any music lover.

The album features Piano Concerto No 5 Emperor, which is one of Ludwig van Beethoven's most popular compositions. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Zubin Mehta, does an excellent job of bringing the piece to life. The orchestra's performance is nothing short of remarkable, and it perfectly complements Radu Lupu's exceptional piano skills.

Radu Lupu's piano playing is undoubtedly the highlight of the album. His performance is powerful, yet delicate, and he perfectly captures the essence of the composition. His playing is full of emotion, and he brings out the nuances of the piece in a way that is both captivating and engaging.

Thumbs down! _TWO_ ads broke through the Adagio section, and two more during the finale??? Why is this monetized, anyway?? YOU didn’t play it, did you?? Making money on the backs of artists like Lupu is obscene!!

Oh dear Lord….. WHY OH WHY does a blasted advert come in the middle of a descending run of notes in an Adagio?? It’s incomprehensible. SURELY, the adverts could be MADE to happen between Movements, not in the middle? It is outrageous. To the person who placed this on YouTube, please DO SOMETHING about these appalling breaks for adverts in the music!

So I'm not the only one who thinks this is the greatest version ever recorded? I had never heard of Radu Lupu in 1970, but I listened to this at the record store and had to have it: I knew the music intimately and I had never heard it played with such imagination and bold enthusiasm. He romps through the first movement in bursts of joy and glee, brings us to tears in the second, and leads us through the Arch Triumphant into Heaven in the third. Not only did Radu Lupu play as though the Master Himself was guiding his hands, but Zubin Mehta was the perfect counterfoil at the podium: he led the Israel Philharmonic to new levels of perfection. It has remained my favorite version of all that I have heard.

I bought the record in 1980 at Pyramid Records in Anchorage (paid the full $15 price tag, too! - my first "digital" recording, each copy identified as a "master," since these were original cuts and not stamped reproductions). I still have the record, played perhaps 6 times on an audiophile-grade turntable, but I wore out several cassette copies.

I got to hear Radu Lupu play the Emperor Concerto live in San Francisco in 1999, with Vladimir Ashkenazy at the podium: he has continued to build and develop his interpretation of the music, and to take it to new emotional levels, and there is no better conductor than Ashkenazy to have collaborated on the interpretation. The SF Chronicle reviewer called his playing "wooly," but I thought it was fabulous!

I'm not a piano music expert at all, but since I've heard Radu Lupu play Piano Concerto No. 5 around the end of the 80s for the 1st time, I can't listen to any other pianist play this masterpiece of Beethoven anymore. And I'm sure, if good old Ludwig van is listening from above, he would sure love his interpretation too. So vital and captivating, just like Beethoven's mind must have been. And Lupu understood this very well! My all time favorite!

Radu Lupu has the most impressive piano sound I've surely ever heard. Besides this beautiful tone pitch, he has a prodigious ability to play,. The combination of this masterful, fabulous technique with an outstanding sensitivity makes of him the piano genius of our times. It in't easy to understand why he is not yet widespread known as such. ??????
