Review by Gabriel Gabriel

Bolcom Plays His Own Rags is a delightful album that showcases the musical genius of William Bolcom. The album features the composer's own renditions of his ragtime compositions, performed with impeccable skill and artistry.

From the opening track, "Graceful Ghost Rag," Bolcom's virtuosity on the piano is on full display. The playful melodies and syncopated rhythms of his rags are infectious, and the listener can't help but tap their foot along to the beat.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Poltergeist Rag," which features haunting melodies and a spooky atmosphere that perfectly captures the mischievous spirit of a poltergeist. Another highlight is "Epitaph for Louis Chauvin," a tribute to the pioneering ragtime pianist who died tragically young.

Throughout the album, Bolcom's playing is masterful, with a light touch and impeccable timing that brings out the best in his compositions. His love for the ragtime genre is evident in every note, and his passion for the music is infectious.

This may well be the best of all the ragtime albums issued during that renaissance period circa 1970. Bolcom has always had a sense of humor in his approach to music, and it shows in his playing. Joshua Rifkin’s Nonesuch recordings of Joplin’s rags were a landmark, to be sure, but they are almost entirely literal interpretations of the printed page. He treated Joplin’s rags as serious compositions, which they were. Bolcom treats the material here as a performer having fun, taking respectful liberties with each piece. A walking base here (as in the final section of Joseph Lamb’s rag) and playfulness with tempos, accents and dynamics, just enough to keep you on your toes. He does it even in his own rags. Note how the final chord in the Seabiscuit Rag is played slightly late, as if, “not sure I wanna end this thing.” I’ve yet to hear any subsequent performance of the Seabiscuit Rag as delightful as this one. I only wish Nonesuch had issues this album as a CD.

Thank you for posting the entire album.

You can really bluesy up Heliotrope Bouquet, esp last two strains. I plan to make a recording once I master it.

Him and his wife, the fun and talented mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, are sending me their autographs for my collection. They were terrifically kind when I asked.

Mr. Bolcom's energetic render of Turpin's Ragtime Nightmare inspired me to learn that piece back in the 1980s. It was in my paltry ragtime repertoire for a few years, until I moved on to other things. This year I decided to dust it off and re-learn it after neglecting and abandoning it for, what, 30 years? I was surprised by how easily it came back to me, didn't realize I had stored some muscle memory on this tune all that time. Helps that Turpin liked the key of C also.
