The Turtles - Grim Reaper Of Love Come Back

Review by Graham Melvill-Smith

The Turtles' album Grim Reaper Of Love Come Back is a nostalgic journey back to the 60s era of rock and roll. The band's signature harmonies and upbeat melodies are showcased throughout the album, making it a must-listen for any fan of the genre.

The album's title track, "Grim Reaper Of Love Come Back," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its catchy chorus and driving rhythm. "Buzz Saw" and "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea (We're The Royal Macadamia Nuts)" are other standout tracks that showcase the band's playful and quirky side.

The Turtles also show their softer side with tracks like "Can I Get To Know You Better" and "Love in the City," both of which feature beautiful harmonies and heartfelt lyrics.

the time signature changes make this song complicated and not a candidate for hitsville. my fav Turtles song though...

Not really a big fan of the Turtle, only know their famous song, Happy Together. Some fans mentioned this song, so wanted to hear, how good this song is. Lousy..

Creativos arriesgados. Excelente

The boys went beyond the pale here...likely leaving DJs the same pallid color. As a followup to the adored YOU BABY,(#20), the Turtles charted here at (#81). A fine downbeat spine tingler, with an Asiatic feel.

I absolutely love this song. It's definitely my favorite Turtles track.

Great tune, dark mood in E minor like the Yardbirds 'Still I'm Sad" and ' Happenings 10 Years Time Ago'

On this day in 1966 {July 8th} the Turtles performed “Grim Reaper of Love" on the ABC-TV week-day afternoon program 'Where The Action Is'...
At the time the song was at #87 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart and that was its 4th and final week on the chart; the two previous weeks it was at #81 and that was its peak position on the chart...
And on the same 'Action' program they also preformed "You Baby"; it had peaked at #20 {for 1 week} earlier in 1966 on March 20th...
Between 1965 and 1970 the Los Angeles-based sextet had seventeen Top 100 records; five made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Happy Together" for 3 weeks on March 19th, 1967...

I am Lovechild 1 month old when this song was emerging...

@IcouldBNE1 You asked if a stereo version exists. Yes. On the Rhino 'Greatest Hits' CD the song is in stereo. It's slightly longer, as the middle section is longer (by artificial extension..someone did some cutting and pasting to make it go on a bit more.)

What a great song. It stuck in my head all day and night.

Dispite a "Litany" of great tunes, this Turtle Tune gets my vote as the best by them!
mytrinia42
Too musically advanced and dark for the music-buying teenager back in 1966.   But for those who study music, this is a work of art.
chemkmitl
way ahead of its time,so much so that it taked on the charts therefore making there record company demand more happy together type songs.

Great song. The Shamen covered it very early on in their career, believe it or not...

This was always my favorite Turtles Song. Too Dark to be a hit. Just my luck .

This was the boys 4th single and the follow up to You Baby. Always liked this one but the buying public didn't go for it. Written by lead guitarist Al Nichol and bass player Chuck Portz.

@lcr1955 It actually sounds like it could have been a theme for a cheap horror B-movie.
