Review by Vishnu Narayanan

Sweet Lizard Illtet's self-titled album is a must-listen for any jazz enthusiast. The album features a unique blend of jazz, funk, and rock elements, creating a sound that is both fresh and familiar. The musicianship on display is exceptional, with each member of the band contributing their own unique style to the mix.

The album kicks off with the upbeat and funky "Funky Duck," which sets the tone for what's to come. From there, the band takes the listener on a journey through various moods and styles, from the laid-back groove of "Lizard Lounge" to the frenetic energy of "Illtet Funk."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Sweet Lizard," which features a haunting melody and intricate guitar work. The song builds to a crescendo before coming back down to earth in a satisfying resolution.

I saw these guys in Hoboken, NJ on Earth Day in the early 90s. I was overcome. Raw and just brilliant. It changed my life. Thanks Mike and Zef! Hope you guys are doing well!

I first heard of these guys when I heard them live at shows in NYC and Hoboken I believe - they were AMAZING live - they combined the sound of Trouble Funk (Wash. D.C. sound) with guitars, rap, so much more... just amazing, and unfortunately, WAY ahead of their time :( .....

Didn't know they were still around.

I hung out with the bass player.. Mike Ill and his wife Rivka a few times when they had their band Mad Happy in the early 2000's. I met them through my other friend whose band was oh my god from Chicago. Good people Mike and Rivka, but I had no idea that this band ever existed and it was not something that ever came up in our discussions. Its good.

I saw SLI perform on the second stage at Lolapalooza 2 back in '92. Awesome performance, and I bought their album the very next week. As other commenters have said, they were definitely ahead of their time.

big fan and I agree their record company showed them no love they should have been big. My band had the opportunity to open for them on a couple of occasions, they were really cool guys.

was a huge fan ot these guys...I was doing projects similar to this out in Cali during the metal funk age. Got to see them in a small bar with no stage around Santa Cruz, CA
You guys were awesome!!

Great fucking band, they were. Got to see them a bunch back in the early 90's. Happy to see this here. Thanks.

I worked at Electric Lady when they were recording this. (no I did not work on the album, I was but a lowly GA at the time). The Studio set up was an experiment of mad scientist proportions, something to be amazed and cock your head at.

The Drums were moved six times and had about 15 mic on it. The engineer on this made heavy use of the large effects plates at the lady creating some awesome 'splwooosh' sounds that are used throughout the album.

I got the CD...without looking I think it was self titled.

I'm a great fan of this band. It's a shame that is over. My cd was stolen a few years ago and I can't find it here in Brazil. I think it's because I live now in a city far from São Paulo. But I wouldn't quit. Very good post!

One of my all time faves. Cannot be reproduced.

I saw these guys in a dive bar in Charlotte, NC around 1994 opening for a band called Egypt. I was hooked immediately and bought the alum that night. To this day it's still one of my favorite finds.

As fresh today as it was back in the day. One of a kind! "the record got no respect." Prophetic.

This album was so ahead of it's time.
