Steve Taylor & The Perfect Foil - Only A Ride

Review by James McGowan

Only a Ride is the latest album by Steve Taylor & The Perfect Foil, and it's a must-have for fans of alternative rock. The album is a perfect blend of catchy hooks, thought-provoking lyrics, and excellent musicianship. The band's sound is unique, with influences from punk, new wave, and classic rock.

The album opens with the upbeat and energetic "Only a Ride," which sets the tone for the rest of the record. The track features Taylor's signature wit and clever wordplay, and it's impossible not to sing along to the catchy chorus. "Goliath" is another standout track, with its driving rhythm and powerful guitar riffs.

One of the highlights of the album is "Moonshot," which features a guest appearance from Peter Furler of Newsboys fame. The track is a tribute to the Apollo 11 moon landing, and it's a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern rock.

Thought provoking lyrics.  Life is only a ride?

Response to the meaning of the song. Granted there could be multiple interpretations, which is the beauty of music.
From the lyrics, it appears to be a song about our life that we feel entitled to. Specifically a life where we want to be first and more fixated on our own entertainment. This would be paralleled with a life that boasts in Christ, who should be first. The lyrics in this specific song do not address that, but rather begs an excellent question. If we are entitled to thrills, and this is what life is all about, why am I bleeding and confused?
Aka, Is there more to life than my own desires?

Reynold's is the perfect foil but I hate rap. I had an uncle Fritz. He was not the perfect foil but a decent one. I used to sing "Uncle Fritz. He used to smoke his dope cuz he done had no hope Uncle Fritz." Yeah my uncle turned me on to LSD. Didn't work though. My sister turned me on to Steve Taylor. That sure worked!

I am a huge ST fan from the begining with I want to be a clone. I had the greatest of privileges to see him with his band a few months ago.Best show I have seen in years and I was amazed that he still had the energy and stage moves he had in the 80s. He even did cartwheels! !
I can't wait for the new album. That being said while I like this song alot, and the other new one Standing in line. I feel that while going for a more modern sound to reach new and younger fans, he might leave us older ones a bit behind. The songs do not have any real instrumental muscle!! There are no real instrumentalguitar solos. For us older classic rockers that is important. I hope the other new songs have a bit more variety and with a great world class guitarist like Jimmy A the guitar playing is going to be world class and he needs to be turned loose a bit. He tore it up on the old stuff live!! That cat can play!!
Anyhow that's my 2 cents worth. I am so glad that Steve is back and rocking!!

Maybe its just a rock song and we can dig it without it reaching into our souls and putting a soft warm hand on it.

Started the breakdown/annotation over at the site formerly known as rapgenius. I'd be interested to hear further additions and speculations as to the song's meaning. (http://rock.genius.com/Steve-taylor-only-a-ride-lyrics) Love this song!

I like the guy getting a watermelon chopped on his head, the wizard blowing up the stage and all of the explosions. The skull with the eyes that light up at the end is a nice touch. How about a new video album? Just 1 video is not enough!

I didn't know anyone else in the world had ever watched Stunt Rock. Yet again, Steve Taylor defies my expectations.

Also, the song is amazing.

It is such a thrill to hear a new Steve Taylor song after nearly 20 years.

Now I just have to figure out what it's about.

The classic Steve Taylor enigmatic style. This song sounds like it was written and performed simultaneously yesterday and 30 years ago.

Welcome back. Excellent work. And MORE PLEASE!
