Sfinx - Zalmoxe

Review by Patrick Meulesteen

The album Zalmoxe by Sfinx is a masterpiece of Romanian progressive rock. With its intricate melodies, complex rhythms, and thought-provoking lyrics, this album has earned its place as one of the most important works in the history of Romanian music.

From the opening track "Zalmoxe" to the closing "Om Bun," the album takes the listener on a journey through the ancient myths and legends of the Dacian people. Through their music, Sfinx explores themes of spirituality, identity, and the struggle to find meaning in a world that is constantly changing.

The musicianship on this album is exceptional, with each member of the band contributing their unique talents to create a sound that is both powerful and nuanced. The guitar work is particularly impressive, with intricate solos and riffs that add depth and texture to the songs.

But what really sets Zalmoxe apart is its lyrical content. The band's use of Romanian folklore and mythology to explore universal themes is both captivating and inspiring. The songs are filled with imagery and symbolism that invite the listener to reflect on their own experiences and beliefs.

About Sfinx

Romanian rock-pop band formed in Bucharest in 1963 by three high school students: Corneliu "Bibi" Ionescu, Octav Zemlička and Cristian Valica. Until 1967 they played at various festivals and student evening gatherings. The band's lineup changed often due to exams, school situations, opposition of parents and disagreements about repertory. The end of 1967 is the turning point with the coming of a new young drummer and guitarist (Marian Toroimac) and a 17 years old, high school music student and violinist (Dan Andrei Aldea). Their first album Lume albă ("White world") was released in 1975 and enjoyed a great success with the audience and critics. Their masterpiece was the 1978 released Zalmoxe (Zalmoxis), a concept album based on the archaic mythology of the Dacians featuring lyrics by Romanian poet Alexandru Basarab. It's a true progresive rock feast, with great keyboard parts.
