Review by Paul OFlaherty

The album Sweet Sue Just You Clarinet Marmalade by Red Nichols And His Five Pennies is a delightful collection of jazz tunes that showcase the virtuosity of the band's musicians. From the opening track, "Sweet Sue Just You," to the closing number, "Clarinet Marmalade," the listener is treated to a lively and energetic performance that is sure to get their toes tapping.

Red Nichols, the band's leader and trumpeter, shines on many of the tracks, displaying his mastery of the instrument with fluid and melodic solos. The other members of the Five Pennies, including clarinetist Pee Wee Russell and trombonist Miff Mole, also make valuable contributions, adding their own unique flair to the music.

The album's standout tracks include "Davenport Blues," a slow and soulful number that showcases the band's ability to create a mood with their music, and "China Boy," an upbeat and lively tune that features some impressive ensemble playing.

The band's style was often called "Chamber Jazz" by critics and for what it lacked in hot intensity it made up for with a cool somewhat detached, yet urban and sophisticated sound. In 1959 Hollywood made a highly fictionalized movie about the band called "The Five Pennies
