Review by Cheryl McCormick

The album "British Music for Brass" by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble is a delightful collection of classical music pieces that showcase the versatility and artistry of the brass ensemble. The ensemble, led by trumpeter Philip Jones, delivers impeccable performances of works by some of the most renowned British composers, including Benjamin Britten, Gustav Holst, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

From the opening track, Britten's "Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury," to the closing piece, Holst's "Suite No. 1 in E-flat," the album takes listeners on a journey through the rich and diverse musical landscape of Britain. The ensemble's tight and precise playing, coupled with their expressive phrasing and dynamic range, make for a truly captivating listening experience.

One standout track is Vaughan Williams' "Toccata Marziale," which showcases the ensemble's virtuosity and musicality. The piece features intricate rhythms and harmonies, and the brass players execute them with ease and finesse. Another highlight is the ensemble's rendition of Elgar's "Nimrod" from the "Enigma Variations," which is both powerful and poignant.
