Painter - Painter

Review by Charo Ruiz

Painter's self-titled album, released in 2021, is a masterpiece of indie rock. The band's unique sound is a blend of dreamy shoegaze and gritty garage rock, with a touch of psychedelic flair. The album is a cohesive journey through a range of emotions, from the introspective "Solitude" to the anthemic "Let It Go."

The standout track is "Electric," a driving, guitar-heavy tune with a catchy chorus that will have listeners singing along. "Fading Away" is another highlight, with its haunting melody and ethereal vocals. The album's production is excellent, with each instrument and vocal track coming through clearly.

I have this album...perhaps the only person in Brasil.....imported DJ version.

This is for the most part rather heavy 70's Rock, but in the more refined half of the spectrum. There are maybe two or so tracks that could be labeled as filler, but the song writing is never lazy and often downright excellent. The technical playing skill level of these musicians as well as the attention to vocal harmonies (at times vaguely reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, Nash

I still have album! Love this, and yes, Canadian rock rules!

I was deep in the music seen in Calgary in the late 60's and 70's and Painter was one of my favorite bands..(there was a lot of GREAT music around here then).. saw the group ...I don;t remember how many times... (the seventies you know)...
spent a lot of time chatting with Bob and the rest of the boys over beers in the Highlander ,Majestic, TradeWinds and the Refinery just to name a few... those were awesome days... miss them... thanx for all the good memories Morley (Moe)

Another great dig in the archives!  Canadian rock rules!!  I have the Elektra single to "Going Home To Rock and Roll".  Growing up in Edmonton, hearing this song on 630 Ched, I had to rush out to Woodwards and buy the single!!  One day I will get the whole album!  Thanks!!

I just showed this album in my best vinyl finds of 2013 video a few days ago. An absolute and obscure gem and follow-on Hammersmith was almost equally as good in my opinion. Brilliant post, thanks for sharing. - Lj

This is one more great example of Canadian music that brings back super memories of parties from Vancouver BC down to SF, CA, during the glory days of the West Coast van culture......Don't come knockin' if this van's rockin!

I rode a ski lift with (I think) Danny Lowe in 1979. He had the first Walkman-type thing I had ever seen. Great skier!

the REAL DEAL.

I rode a ski lift with one of these guys in Banff in 1979. He had the first Walkman type device I had ever seen. (Probably Danny Lowe?)

Wow, I had no idea, and I was born here and lived most of my life here. Huh. Same with Loverboy, I always thought they were west coast too.

My husband replaced Bob Ego when he left, while still Painter, and then name changed to Hammersmith, due to legalities of changing record co's to Mercury. Yes the Painter Album is out in CD now. See Bob Ego's web site! Hammersmith then did 2 albums under Mercury. My husband was on the first one only. Becky Llewellyn(Jim Llewellyn)

@BBINGHAM032352
You're wrong. They were all from Calgary & Edmonton Alberta, Canada. Please read th band bio below my video...and check out Bob Ego's website. They evolved out of 60s bands 'Shades Of Blond" and "The 49th Parallel" who were from Calgary.
robinruddy
Weren't these guys from Vancouver,B.C.?? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks...glad you enjoyed! I've been a fan of this band since back in the day, and saw them live on a few occasions. I remember seeing "Painter" predecessor acts "Shades Of Blonde" and "49th Parallel" played at my High School as well....long live slabs of plastic, turn tables and them funky old school tube amps with massive capacitors :)

This is one fantastic album.......very underappreciated in my opinion!! I also have a white-label promo vinyl copy, that I was lucky enough to find YEARS ago.......
