Review by Onça de Tule

The album "Getz Au Go Go: A Live Performance" by the New Stan Getz Quartet featuring Astrud Gilberto is a must-have for jazz lovers. This live recording captures the magic of the quartet's performance at the Cafe Au Go Go in New York City in 1964.

The album features the smooth and melodic saxophone playing of Stan Getz, who is accompanied by a talented quartet consisting of Gary Burton on vibraphone, Gene Cherico on bass, and Joe Hunt on drums. The addition of the sultry and seductive vocals of Astrud Gilberto adds a unique dimension to the quartet's sound.

The album opens with the classic "Corcovado," which showcases Gilberto's beautiful voice and Getz's effortless saxophone playing. Other standout tracks include "One Note Samba," "Desafinado," and "The Girl From Ipanema," which became a hit single and cemented Gilberto's status as a jazz icon.

I first heard this on the Voice of America Jazz Hour on my Hallicrafters shortwave radio in Minnesota. I bought the LP. I played tenor sax in the high school stage band :-)

I had the vinyl in the 60's and lost it. Voila! I have found it again. Can't believe I'm the only one here,

Stan Getz was an unbelievable musician whose lyricism and control were easily distinguished among his peers. He was the epitome of concentration, always closing his eyes when soloing. Getz reminds me of Edgar Pouchet Junior whose arrangements for Silver Stars Steel Orchestra are identified by his inimitable signature strum.

I love this sound, it is also thanks to this that my favorite band (the Doors) was born. Their link is indisputable.
