This album is a lost alternative rock classic. Released in 1995 and promptly forgotten in the brit pop wave it is a creative and adventurous mashup of funk, trip hop, techno, brit pop jangles, and punk rock riffs. The album has a sometimes dreamy, sometimes aggressive aesthetic that strikes a near perfect balance over toe tapping rhythms. With John Penney's earnest vocal delivery lurching from desperate pleading to sarcastic sneering which he does best by delivering witty and sincere lyrics aided in principle by guitarist Rat wailing away with more than a few crunchy riffs, shimmering jangles, and well coloured solos over the top of the thundering bombast of a rhythm section (that double bass boy). The band really shines on tracks like the lead track All I Ask of Myself Is That I Hold Together, Your Only Joke, Stuck, ...To Be Right, I Want It Over, and Traffic. If you enjoy Ned's Atomic Dustbin or like heavy riffed alternative rock with deep grooves this definitely an album to check out.

Back in the 90s a lot of people I knew kind of slagged this album off as selling out or something due to the industrial influence. Retrospectively it actually holds up pretty well. Maybe it was just a little before its time.
