Marc Almond's latest album, Jacques, is a beautiful tribute to the French singer-songwriter Jacques Brel. The album captures the essence of Brel's music and poetry, while also showcasing Almond's own unique style and interpretation.

The album features 12 tracks, all of which are Brel covers. Almond's vocals are powerful and emotive, perfectly capturing the raw passion and intensity of Brel's lyrics. The arrangements are also top-notch, featuring a range of instruments and styles that complement the songs perfectly.

Jacques is a must-listen for fans of Brel's music, as well as for anyone who appreciates beautiful, soulful music. Almond has done an excellent job of paying homage to Brel while also making the songs his own, resulting in an album that is both authentic and original. Highly recommended.

Dramatic I haven’t heard it before

An inopportune and ill-advised labour of love which quite rightly failed to get any major record label backing. A tribute to the avant-garde Belgian composer, songwriter, film director and actor, Jacques Brel, the songs collected here were recorded over a four-year period. Brel's work always incorporated abstract musical styles which to many prove inaccessible, and this reviewer has always found his output the height of artistic pretension. Therefore, despite Almond's vocal ability this was always going to prove an uninspiring choice of subject for a tribute.

Can't beat Brel's version if you can follow it, but it's a veritable effort to translate it into English to fit the melody. And Marc and Paul Buck (in translating) have done a fine job bring this work to a greater audience.
