Review by Amy Lakes

Gotcha by Lonnie Smith is a jazz album that showcases the exceptional talent of the master organist. Released in 1968, the album features a strong lineup of musicians, including Lee Morgan on trumpet, David Newman on tenor saxophone, Melvin Sparks on guitar, and Marion Booker Jr. on drums.

The album opens with the title track, "Gotcha", a funky and upbeat tune that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The following track, "Slow High", is a slower and more contemplative piece that allows each musician to shine individually.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", a cover of the famous jazz standard. Lonnie Smith's organ playing is particularly impressive on this track, and the whole band works together to create a dynamic and engaging performance.

Another highlight of the album is "Twenty-Five Miles", a soulful and groovy tune that features some excellent guitar work from Melvin Sparks. The album closes with "It's Changed", a slower and more reflective piece that showcases Lonnie Smith's ability to create a mood and atmosphere with his playing.
