Khanate - Things Viral

Review by Dries Grobler

Khanate's album, Things Viral, is a hauntingly beautiful and intense work of art. The band's unique blend of doom metal and experimental noise creates an eerie atmosphere that is both captivating and unsettling. The album's opening track, "Commuted," sets the tone for the entire album with its slow, droning riffs and Michael Gira's haunting vocals. The following tracks, such as "Fields" and "Dead," continue to build on this atmosphere, with the band's use of dissonant chords and abrasive textures.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Skin Coat," which features a guest appearance by Alan Dubin of the band Khan. The track is a slow-burning, atmospheric piece that highlights the band's ability to create an intense and emotionally charged experience for the listener. The album's closing track, "Too Close Enough to Touch," is a perfect conclusion to the album, with its haunting vocals and sparse instrumentation.

The band's second 2003 album, Things Viral, is a better replica of their debut, with more slamming shrieked vocals and depressive, sparse instrumentation.Highlights: "Dead".
