JS Bach Gillian Weir - Great Organ Works

Review by Scott Storvik

Great Organ Works by JS Bach Gillian Weir is a remarkable album that showcases the incredible talent of the legendary composer and the virtuosity of the organist. The album features some of Bach's most beloved and complex works, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, as well as lesser-known pieces that are equally impressive.

Weir's performance is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Her mastery of the instrument is evident in every note she plays, and her interpretation of Bach's music is both faithful to the composer's intentions and imbued with her own unique style. The clarity and precision of her playing are particularly impressive, as she navigates the intricate counterpoint and complex harmonies of Bach's music with ease.

The album is beautifully recorded, with the rich, full sound of the organ captured in all its glory. The listener can hear every nuance of Weir's playing, from the thundering bass notes to the delicate trills and ornamentation.

About JS Bach Gillian Weir

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
