American saxophonist and jazz composer. Born: 23 September 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA. Died: 17 July 1967 in Huntington, Long Island, New York, USA (aged 40) from liver cancer. John Coltrane was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His early recordings capture a musician in the relatively conventional confines of bebop and hardbop, but his enduring legacy primarily rests on the modal jazz pioneered by his classic quartet (1960-64) and by free jazz explorations late in his career. He recorded more than fifty albums as a leader and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, performing with other giants of jazz like and . Coltrane received numerous awards including a posthumous "Special Citation" from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007 for his 'masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship and iconic centrality to the history of jazz'. As his life progressed, his music and outlook became increasingly spiritual. After his death he was proclaimed as a saint by the African Orthodox church that took his name. Coltrane's second wife was pianist ; their son is also a saxophonist.

I am digging this late night listen. When I saw this album cover, all of a sudden I thought about THE STEVE HARVEY SHOW and THE NEIGHBORHOOD. The observant ones who take time to read this will be hip to why I typed this.

This is awesome. Funny how I've known and loved the Santana version of this song for 40 years but never heard the original Gene Ammons version until right now. And it's not like I didn't know it was a Gene Ammons song and it's not like I didn't know who Gene Ammons was. I just missed it. Looks like I've found my next album purchase.

He was a genius. He paid a terrible price for his addiction. But his musical depiction of the drug life is pure genius.

But Man these old school classics just hit the spot MAN.....The beginning, that funk guitar rides my left ear, the little drum break on my right side ear carry the whole tune, the Rhodes in the background keepin it alive the sax just really hittin the soul, i will show this to my kids and my girlfriend.
