Ibrahim Maalouf - Dia

Review by Tonie Konig

Ibrahim Maalouf's latest album, Dia, is a beautiful tribute to his late friend and collaborator, the Algerian singer and musician Rachid Taha. The album is a fusion of Maalouf's signature jazz trumpet sound and Taha's Rai music, resulting in a unique and captivating sound.

The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful "S3NS," which features Maalouf's trumpet playing over a pulsing beat and Taha's vocals. The track sets the tone for the rest of the album, which is a mix of upbeat dance tracks and slower, more contemplative pieces.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Una Rosa Blanca," which features Maalouf's trumpet playing alongside the Spanish singer Concha Buika's soulful vocals. The track is a beautiful blend of Spanish and Arabic influences and showcases Maalouf's ability to seamlessly fuse different musical styles.

Another highlight of the album is "Sourire d'Emma," a beautiful and melancholy track that features Maalouf's trumpet playing over a simple piano melody. The track is a touching tribute to Maalouf's daughter and showcases his ability to create emotional and evocative music.
