The GoBetweens - 1978 1990

Review by rose niles

The Go-Betweens' album 1978-1990 is a true masterpiece that showcases the band's evolution over the years. The album is a compilation of the band's greatest hits from their early beginnings in 1978 to the release of their album "Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express" in 1990.

The album features some of the band's most iconic tracks, including "Cattle and Cane," "Streets of Your Town," and "Bachelor Kisses." Each song is a testament to the band's unique sound, blending jangly guitars, infectious melodies, and poetic lyrics to create a sound that is both nostalgic and timeless.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Right Here," which perfectly captures the band's ability to create a sense of intimacy and connection with their listeners. The song's gentle acoustic guitar and heartfelt lyrics create a powerful emotional impact that is hard to forget.

While the album may contain a number of great tracks, it does neither work as an album nor as a collection. It does NOT contain the best tracks from the band, it does NOT follow any logic or order. The inclusion of b-sides and rarities and the omitting of great album tracks appears to be rather random.Any of the better albums of the band make a better choice than this compilation.

One of the most beautiful pop songs ever written. I know lots of people here think of Australia when they hear this song, but I think of growing up in southeast Texas, fields of cattle, fields of cane.

This song is up there with the Churches “Under the Milkyway”, if you ask me. Isn’t it funny how Steve Kilby formed Jack Frost with Grant too… well it’s a coincidence to me hahaha. Love reading everyone’s comments too.

Bit of Joy Division influence there?

My God, the syncopated baseline! They take the end of the string and run to the hills, just until the ball nearly unravels. Then when two lines appear to converge in the distance, the music fades.
