Gabriel Saloman - Song For CSEC

Review by Richard E Smith

Gabriel Saloman's album "Song For CSEC" is a haunting and introspective work that showcases the artist's mastery of ambient and experimental music. The album consists of four tracks that are each over 10 minutes long, providing ample time for Saloman to explore the sonic landscapes he has created.

The album's opening track, "What Belongs To Love," sets the tone for the rest of the work with its slow, mournful guitar lines and distant, echoing percussion. The following track, "Cold Haunt," takes the listener on a journey through eerie, otherworldly soundscapes that are both beautiful and unsettling.

The album's title track, "Song For CSEC," is perhaps the most emotionally charged piece on the record. It builds slowly, with layers of guitar and feedback gradually building in intensity until they reach a climax that is both cathartic and devastating.

The album's final track, "Adhere," is a quiet and contemplative piece that provides a sense of closure to the album. It features delicate guitar lines and subtle electronic textures that create a sense of serenity and peace.

  • This is the audio component of an artwork called "Song For CSEC". It accompanies a pencil crayon rubbing that reveals the impression of a toll free number. Calling the number triggers a 2 minute audio message featuring a variety of incidental phone noises and a recording of the installation of the exhibition, recorded from the place where the listener is standing.
  • This artwork was created for "No Linguistic Content", an exhibition held 221A Artist Run Centre in Vancouver in 2014. The exhibition, curated by Bopha Chhay, explored ways artists were responding to surveillance. CSEC (Communications Security Establishment) is the Canadian government's information and telecommunications security agency, the closest approximation to the US' NSA or the UK's GCHQ.
