Freaky Chakra - Lowdown Motivator

Review by Frank Chen

Freaky Chakra's latest album, Lowdown Motivator, is a stunning addition to their already impressive discography. The album features a unique blend of electronic beats and ambient soundscapes that create a mesmerizing listening experience.

From the opening track, "The Secret Story of the Moon," the listener is transported to a world of pulsating rhythms and ethereal melodies. The album's title track, "Lowdown Motivator," is a standout with its hypnotic bassline and haunting vocals.

Freaky Chakra's ability to seamlessly blend different genres is evident in tracks like "Funkadelicific" and "The Eye of the Storm," which feature elements of funk and jazz. The album's closer, "The Last Train to Lhasa," is a beautiful and contemplative piece that perfectly caps off the journey.

About Freaky Chakra

Freaky Chakra emerged out of the San Francisco underground after a chance introduction to Exist Dance head Mike Kandel (a.k.a. Tranquility Bass) through mutual friend Miguel Fierro (a.k.a. Single Cell Orchestra). Kandel liked Daum Bentley's demo, and in the summer of 1993, Exist Dance released "Halucifuge / Transcendental Funk Bump," which became an underground hit. He followed this single with the "March Of The Tangent," EP and the full-length "Lowdown Motivator," and "Blacklight Fantasy," as well as a collaboration with Single Cell Orchestra.

I was at a psy festival in 2011, and dawn was breaking, I wandered into the forest adjacent to the chill stage, still glowing from the night before, I was taking photos of the golden light streaming thru the pine needles, and then this song came on, it was unreal!

Oh yeah, have this on CD, along with Freaky Chakra's other albums. Single Cell Orchestra too. All that California Flow shit. That was the real deal back in the day!
Astralwerks could do no wrong, every release was gold. Like "Tone Capsule" by Soul Oddity. Bought that without knowing anything about it. Absolutely fantastic Electro-Funk album!

This was possibly the most important album that got me into electronic music. We even wiped out in the car going back to burning man 95’ listening to it. Had to cut out a seatbelt to tie to another car to get us back

transcendent techno album from an era when one could get away with a lot. Fits nicely with the Future Sound of London.

Back at my university days in 1996 a colleague recorded this album for me on a cassette tape. Since then I was looking for the source, he said "it's Freaky Chakra" but I couldn't find any information on it back in 1996... went back to google it for several years and now back in Chile diggin in my mother's stuff found the tape and shazamed it... finally found it!!!!!! Been listening to it for several years without finding any information on it. Thank you so much for uploading it.

When this came out in 95’ Astralwerks sent me a flyer describing the album. Mailman delivered it to my elderly neighbor by mistake. He came over with it and said, “I’ve read it 3 times and I still don’t understand it.” I said, “Yeah it’s designed to be Incomprehensible, so only we can read it.” So the old man called the cops on me thinking it must have something to do with drugs. Cop said, “What’s a freaky chakra?”

I imprinted on this album like a duckling, back in the day, and will follow it around forever.

Every single track on here is solid. I mean, most albums, even really good albums, have that one track that just underperforms. You know that track? The one you skip, if you are playing it for friends, because you don't want to waste their time and diminish their appreciation for the super genius parts?

This album does not contain that track.
