Review by Amanda Rodden

Frank Mimita's album "Mornas E Coladeras" is a stunning tribute to the rich musical traditions of Cape Verde. The album features a mix of mornas and coladeras, two styles of music that are unique to the island nation. Mimita's smooth and soulful voice is the perfect match for these beautiful melodies.

The album begins with the hauntingly beautiful "Nôs Ilha," a morna that captures the essence of Cape Verdean life. Mimita's voice is filled with emotion, and he delivers the lyrics with a deep sense of longing. The instrumentation is simple but effective, with acoustic guitar and percussion providing a soft bed for Mimita's vocals.

Other standout tracks include "Morna de Cabo Verde," a lively celebration of Cape Verdean music, and "Coladera da Praia," a joyful ode to the beaches of Cape Verde. Throughout the album, Mimita's voice is the star of the show, but the musicianship is also top-notch. The guitar work is particularly impressive, with intricate fingerpicking and beautiful chord progressions.

About Frank Mimita

Francisco Nunes de Pina was born in Achada de Santo António, Praia, on August 4th, 1943 and died on January 25, 1980 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In December 1966 he emigrated to Portugal where he stayed for some time, performing in Cape Verdean nights, before settling down in Rotterdam, Holland. An excellent cavaquinho performer, having accompanied artists such as Luís Rendall (with whom he was part of a group in Lisbon, with Calú, Taninho and Bana) on recordings, it was, however, the voice that eventually gave Frank glory. A talented composer who covers various genres of the Cape Verdean musical space, his satirical music - the coladera - generally focuses on subjects related to everyday scenes, using figures mainly from his neighborhood, Achada de Santo António, around which he develops his entire plot
