Eddie Harris - Plug Me In

Review by Eguda Solo Suleiman (E.S.S.)

The album Plug Me In by Eddie Harris is a masterpiece of jazz fusion, showcasing the legendary saxophonist's virtuosity and creativity. Released in 1968, the album features Harris experimenting with various electronic effects and instruments, such as the Varitone, an electronic device that allowed him to manipulate the sound of his saxophone.

The album opens with the funky and upbeat "Live Right Now," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Harris's saxophone playing is fluid and expressive, and his use of the Varitone adds a futuristic edge to the music. Other standout tracks include "It's Crazy," a soulful ballad that showcases Harris's melodic sensibility, and "The Reason Why I'm Talking S--t," a funky instrumental that features Harris's scorching horn lines.

Throughout the album, Harris is backed by a talented group of musicians, including bassist Melvin Jackson, drummer Billy Hart, and pianist Jodie Christian. The chemistry between the musicians is evident, and they create a cohesive and dynamic sound that is both innovative and accessible.

the distinctive sound of the electrified tenor sax is the most surprising thing but in the long run the most limiting, because unfortunately it crushes the dynamics and cools the sound of the talented eddie harris (this is felt above all in jazz ballads or in the cinematic arrangement of " theme in search of a t.v. commercial ", while it is very suitable for the groovy opening track). it is however a more than pleasant listening that ranges between many stimuli and cocktail arrangements in pure 60's style, something that I always love to listen to.

My favorite cut from what was, I believe, E.H.'s second electric-sax LP, the first being released earlier that same year ("The Electrifying Eddie Harris,"1968).
The arrangement is by Chess Records stalwart, Charles Stepney, and the ferocious groove is underpinned by the drumming of Grady Tate.
Classic proto-Funk/Jazz, and considering how static the harmony is, this is a really interesting record.
