Review by Renatho Siqueira

The album "The Organ at St Sulpice Paris" featuring Dupré Franck Widor Michael Murray is a stunning masterpiece that showcases the beauty of the organ music. The album is a compilation of three legendary composers' works, and the performances by Michael Murray are exceptional.

The album starts with Dupré's Prelude and Fugue in B major, which is a powerful and intense piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The organ's sound is rich and resonant, and Murray's playing is precise and expressive.

Next up is Franck's Prelude, Fugue, and Variation, which is a beautiful and melodic piece that highlights the organ's ability to create a wide range of sounds and emotions. Murray's interpretation of the piece is masterful and captures the essence of Franck's music perfectly.

The album concludes with Widor's Symphony No. 6, which is a monumental work that showcases the full range of the organ's capabilities. Murray's playing is outstanding, and he brings out the complexity and richness of Widor's composition.

About Dupré Franck Widor Michael Murray

French organist, pianist, composer, and pedagogue (born Rouen, Normandy, 3 May 1886; died Meudon, near Paris, 30 May 1971). Born into a musical family, he was a child prodigy. His father Albert Dupré, organist in Rouen, was a friend of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, who built an organ in the family house when Marcel was 14 years old. He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1904, where he studied with Louis Diémer and Lazare Lévy (piano), and (organ), and (fugue and composition). In 1914, Dupré won the Grand Prix de Rome for his cantata, Psyché. In 1926, he was appointed professor of organ performance and improvisation at the Paris Conservatoire, a position he held until 1954. After World War I, Dupré rapidly established his reputation as a concert artist following his performance (from memory!) of the complete organ works of Bach in a series of recitals in Paris. Throughout his life, he performed a total of 2178 recitals in Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe. In 1934, Dupré succeeded Charles-Marie Widor as titular organist at St. Sulpice in Paris, a post he held until his death in 1971. As a composer, he produced a wide-ranging œuvre of 65 works, and also taught two generations of well-known organists such as , and , , , and many others. His most often heard and recorded compositions tend to be from the earlier years of his career. In many ways Dupré may be viewed as a 'Paganini' of the organ - being a virtuoso of the highest order, he contributed extensively to the development of technique (both in his organ music and in his pedagogical works) although, like Paganini, his music is relatively unknown to musicians other than those who play the instrument for which the music was written.n

Cesar Franck, Michael Murray, Cavaille-Coll, St. Sulpice..., what more do you want!?!?!?

Superb playing. Michael Murray plays in my opinion the best performance by far of the Widor sym 6 Finale. To many organists play this piece far too fast. Murray has perfect
right speed and a grand finish. Greetings from Canada!

this was his last goodbye as a musician and he retired because he knew he made his final recording perfectly

Complete recordings of Marcel Dupre, or Michael Murray, or the St Sulpice???

Would you happen to have a recording of just the finale of Widors 6th? If not thats perfectly fine. :)

My very first organ CD and it remains one of my favorites.

What an honor it must have been to have studied with Marcel Dupré.
I highly recommend Dr. Murray's book: Marcel Dupre: The Work Of A Master Organist.

I think Michael Murray is quite possibly the greatest American organist there ever was.

Small wonder that Murray retired after this recording. He couldn't possibly top it!

Thanks for sharing this with us. Michael Murray never fails to deliver and loves to make subwoofers run for cover.

This is all stellar music, but I especially loved the thoughtful, pulsing rhythm and motif of "Antiphon III" (15:35-19:40, from "Vêpres du Commun des Fêtes de la Sainte Vierge, opus 18, also known as Fifteen Pieces). Elegant, poetic, transcendent. Stunning.

The truth is self-evident. Only love, understanding and expertise like this will both stand the test of time and transcend it. Bravo. CVD

Firstly, I think all of the pieces recorded here are not only incredible compositions in their own right but are played immaculately on this organ. St Sulpice possesses an organ of genius craftsmanship and vision. If I had to choose a favorite piece on the disc, it would have to be the Magnificat VI: Gloria (Finale);  the rhythm and drive performed in it are something very special indeed! This fine Cavaille Coll is a masterpiece both musically and architecturally speaking. Mr. Murray brings it to life superbly in this Telarc CD. The sound engineers really captured the instrument very well. It's a treasure to listen to. Obviously, a huge thanks must go out to Daniel Roth for continuing to excite audiences over and draw the many thousands of visitors up into the loft every year. He also deserves a huge amount of respect as an Organist, composer, and as someone that has helped preserve the organ's unique character by not jumping on the modernization bandwagon. Daniel Roth is one of the best organists in terms of French repertoire but I do have to admit that Murray's performance of the Finale from Widor's Symphony No. 6, Op. 42 on this CD is much better than that of Roth's on his JAV recording. The tempo makes it grander. However, that is just my opinion, for what it's worth.
