Born on May 5th 1972 in Vancouver, Canada, Devin Townsend is a multi-instrumentalist and producer. At the age of 19, he caught the attention of Steve Vai, who recruited him as the vocalist in his band, Vai, for the "Sex & Religion" album and consequent world tour. Since then, he spent his career in projects he started himself, as an expression of the different "sides" of his creativity: the two main projects are Strapping Young Lad (a speed/industrial metal band), and Devin Townsend/the Devin Townsend Band/Devin Townsend Project. After releasing 4 studio albums and 1 live album under the name Devin Townsend (Ocean Machine Biomech, Infinity, the live album Official Bootleg, Physicist, and Terria), Devin changed the band name to The Devin Townsend Band to reflect his first stable lineup of backing musicians. Releasing 2 albums under that band name (Accelerated Evolution and Synchestra) and 3 side albums under the Devin Townsend name (Devlab, The Hummer, and the comedic concept album Ziltoid The Omniscient) he eventually announced Ziltoid might be his final album. He came back 2 years later with a new band name Devin Townsend Project and the start of a 4 album cycle (Ki, Addicted!, Deconstruction, and Ghost) which were released 2009-2011. Following this up with 4 more albums (Epicloud, Z2/Dark Matters (a Ziltoid sequel), Sky Blue, and Transcendence), he announced in 2018 that he would be dropping the Devin Townsend Project band name. 2019's release (Empath) saw him once more using the band name Devin Townsend.

Probably my favourite Devin Townsend Album. Earth day is a special track. Each and every track holds good in their own right. Brilliant Album. Ethereal tunes.

Terria was THE album that made me a lifelong Devin Townsend fan. I was first introduced to him by my dad who showed me his work with Steve Vai and that later led him to introduce Devin's solo stuff to me. I've since moved on from calling this my favorite Devin album but it remains extremely special to me and among my favorites. This album and his 2012 album, Epicloud, hold a lot of memories for me.You just have to admire what he was going for here. Musically, it was heavily inspired by the beauty of Canadian nature. Thematically, it's supposed to be about Adam and Eve witnessing the end of the world (though I'm guessing that was meant to be more philosophical than a literal concept). Even from the eerie opener, "Olive", these themes and feels are clear but tracks like "Mountain", "Earth Day", and "Canada" really drive that point home.What's more is that every song's music and theme are perfectly matched. "Mountain" is rock-solid, mimicking the steadiness of the mountains, but also contains moments of delicate melody to capture the beauty and it ends with the sound of machinery, symbolizing mankind's tendency to tear down forests to build factories when existing buildings lay dormant. "Earth Day" was written about the literal Earth Day but I personally interpret it as a sarcastic response to the eco/green crowd's overzealous attacks on anything that uses nature for mankind's benefit. "Deep Peace" is literally about finding calm among life, through nature, and the music is appropriately beautiful and peaceful. The list goes on.The only song that could be considered weak is "Down and Under" because it's not particularly memorable but it doesn't detract from the rest of the album which is literally nothing but mastery and brilliance. Whether it's the epic nature of "Earth Day", the serene beauty of "Deep Peace" or "Tiny Tears", the somber nature of "Nobody's Here" or "Stagnant" or the heavier songs like "Mountain" and "The Fluke", this album is nothing but genius and is easily among the best albums Devin has ever released. It's also really underappreciated, as well; most Devin fans praise it but casual fans and non-fans really need to hear this album. It's brilliant in every way and just further proves the genius of this dude.
