She lived up the street from me on Hanover Ave. I was to young. I remember her jingles on the radio. Seen this album in the band box and the nickel bag. Seen her at the Tobacco Company in 1977.
Found this to pair up with a Neil Young and the Squires (also a swing band) post. I grew up in the burbs, and remember seeing commercials for Coxon's Army with Pat Benatar when I was in high school. I think her group was popular - just on a local level. She attended Stonybrook (edited here) for a few years in the opera program, with helped develop her page vocal range. She was working in the Richmond area when she started singing gigs, leading to this gig.
I remember my music teacher Mr Ellithorpe, who played trombone in the band, would talk about Coxons Army and Pat when they would do gigs. I was to young for the bar scene then but fell madly in love with her and voice after seeing them on a PBS special. When she hit the big time I would tell people she use to play in Richmond and they would tell me I was crazy. Of course this was before a thing called internet was invented.
I thought I was dreaming, no kidding. I was raised in Richmond and used to live in the VCU area. I knew I had seen them play a free gig or two in the park and other areas around town. Used to hang out at a place called the Back Door and a place around the corner Hababbas, rarely. Occasionally a band would play in the VCU gym. Glad to know I wasn't making this up. What a laugh. What a voice she had/has. What a great time for music.
I worked in Petersburg, VA when Pat was very popular. Coxon's Army played in town very often. Pat was a teller at a local bank. We got them on a show I directed at the ABC affiliate. "Shock Theater". It was a blast and her voice was amazing!
Wow, the very last shot at 3:13 just shows how well mother time has kissed Pat upon the forehead. 36 years on from 1974 to 2010 and she still almost looks the same. That last photo from 2010 was taken at a book signing, so it's not a "pro" shot that could be airbrushed or worked on. Just amazing. I wonder what her secret is?
