Review by Steven Rosenberg

The album First Violin Concerto Two Violin Rhapsodies by Béla Bartók, performed by the Brno State Philharmonic Orchestra, János Ferencsik, and André Gertler, is an outstanding tribute to the Hungarian composer. The ensemble delivers a masterful performance of Bartók's intricate and challenging compositions.

The album opens with the First Violin Concerto, a piece that showcases Bartók's unique style of blending folk music with classical music. Gertler's violin playing is nothing short of brilliant, navigating the complex rhythms and melodies with ease. The orchestra provides a solid foundation, with Ferencsik conducting with precision and sensitivity.

The Two Violin Rhapsodies, which follow the concerto, are equally impressive. Gertler is joined by fellow violinist, Tibor Varga, and the two create a beautiful interplay of sound. The orchestra once again proves to be a perfect complement to the soloists, highlighting the intricate melodies and harmonies of Bartók's compositions.

Born: 1881-03-25 (Nagyszentmiklós, Magyar Királyság). Died: September 26, 1945 (New York, New York, United States). Béla Viktor János Bartók was a Hungarian composer, pianist, ethnomusicologist and collector of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music (born 25/03/1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, today Sânnicolau Mare, Romania - died 25/09/1945 in New York, U.S.A). He is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century; his vast production reveals a daring and restless harmonic instinct that is affected by his passionate studies on Hungarian folk songs. Typical elements of Béla Bartók style (derived from Hungarian, Transylvanian and Romanian folklore) consists in the use of irregular rhythms and a clear preference for obsessive rhythms. His compositions have sonorities, sometimes abstract, but often harsh, rough and barbaric. Married to the pianist . His 2nd son, became a recording engineer.
