Bob Berg - Steppin Live In Europe

Review by Anida Greenloverzz

Steppin Live In Europe by Bob Berg is a highly energetic and engaging jazz album that showcases the saxophonist's virtuosity and improvisational skills. Recorded live during his European tour in the late 1980s, the album features Berg's working quartet at the time, including pianist Dave Kikoski, bassist Ed Howard, and drummer Victor Lewis.

Throughout the album, Berg's saxophone playing is characterized by his signature blend of muscularity and lyricism, as he weaves intricate melodies and harmonies over the band's swinging rhythms. His solos are often fiery and intense, showcasing his technical prowess and ability to build momentum and tension.

The quartet's interplay is tight and cohesive, with each member contributing to the overall sound and feel of the music. Kikoski's piano playing is particularly noteworthy, as he adds harmonic depth and complexity to the ensemble's sound. Howard and Lewis provide a solid rhythmic foundation, driving the music forward with their propulsive grooves and dynamic accents.

Personally, I would never say it's anywhere near to be the best. I've found it rather tiring to listen to as it apprears too nervous and jittery with no deliberate pauses that mark mature musicians, also found it rather predictive and generic. To me Davis is by far better, more mature and inventive.

Not sure why people are not totally embarrassed by these inane statements “ best….ever”. Really now?? Funny- they are never said by - musicians.

Best soprano sax solo? I once heard a Japanese housewife "catch fire" all of a sudden in a Tokyo street concert. Most inspired thing I ever saw. The audience flipped out.

LOVE the title of vid! I always fast forwarded to this part of the album, (& have ALWAYS said the same thing about miles) lol... But what's nice after listening to it about 100-200 x's, I can see & hear the respect & love he (Bob) had for the genius that was Miles, that he didn't mind the interruption. Rather, its so endearing to hear him try to mimic & vibe with the legend. Warms my heart... Esp considering where Bob gets his initial theme for the beginning of the solo.... & the powerhouse of what he brings from the breakdown all the way until miles delivers the surprise ending on him! Pure gold! Bob was always on point. RIP, one of greatest sax players to ever grace our ears! Thx for posting! ?? Now this edited song is on my Playlist! No more skipping ahead to this part ?

Bob threw Miles off by offsetting what he was playing and the rhythm section was like ye lets get him some space
