German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music. Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.

I have heard this concerto performed live by multiple soloists (Biss, Sudbin and Zacharias), but the Fleisher recording is still my favorite.

The best of the best.

The first version of this masterpiece I ever heard, maybe 25 years ago, and I've heard few since to rival it.

I grew up in the Cleveland area and had parents that were classical music fans. My dad made the first stereo on the block when everyone else had mono. Can picture him now as he would crank it up, and wildly conduct to the 1812 overture, much to my mothers chagrin (she liked different pieces like this one). I, of course HATED classical, rebelled and listened to rock and roll. As I matured, I found that it was in my DNA, and there was no avoiding the beauty that classical is. How fortunate was I to have had the Cleveland Orchestra to go see! I'm 55 today, and go to Blossom Music center to see Rock n Roll concerts, and of course the symphony on the 4th of July! But we have the true gem, Severance Hall, where I still go today to watch one of the greatest symphonies in the world in one of the most amazingly restored Halls in the world.No, I did not get to see the Cleveland World Series of Rock. No, I did not get to see this masterfully done Concerto by Szell, and Leon Fleisher. But I sure do have it and listen to it extensively! Thanks George and Leon!Cleveland Rocks!

Sublime at 23:50, which I've always thought of as the spiritual heart of the concerto.
And this, a mini proto-Das Rheingold opening, at 27:15?

Still the standard. I grew up in Cleveland listening to this cycle in my bedroom;
too many young concerto players lack sweepingly onward interpretations,
and wallow in a series of pinned-together 'sections'.
