Review by komarudin odin

The Art of Lovin' is a self-titled album by the American psychedelic rock band, Art of Lovin'. Released in 1968, the album features ten tracks that showcase the band's unique blend of folk, rock, and blues.

The album opens with the upbeat and catchy "Take a Ride," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The songs are all well-crafted and showcase the band's impressive musicianship. The lead guitar work on tracks like "You've Got the Power" and "What the Young Minds Say" is particularly impressive.

The band's psychedelic influences are evident throughout the album, with tracks like "Fading Blues" and "Country Road" featuring swirling organs and trippy guitar effects. The album's closing track, "Good Times," is a fitting end to the album, with its optimistic lyrics and upbeat melody.

Hang On To A Dream also covered by Gandalf, written by Tim Hardin.

Sandy and i were friends in mid and late 70s we played guitar together . I recently went looking for him and found out what happened to him.I have some of his art from the late 70s very different from what i am seeing today and his poetry was a little wild. Rest in peace my friend .

Psych rock/pop with male/female vocals and organ. his is a nice little psych pop/rock album from "Bosstown". Built around the talents of singer/guitarist Paul Applebaum, bassist Johnny Lank, sax player Barry Tatelman, vocalist Gail Winnick and drummer Sandy Winslow, 1968 saw the band signed by the small Detroit-based Mainstream Records. Shortly after the album was released Winslow suffered a schizophrenic episode that left him in and out of care for the next 30 years.

The whole album is pretty good but What the Young Minds Say is still by far my favourite song on it. I love the smooth jazz saxophone in that song (I don't think I've heard any other psychedelic rock songs with it and it adds a whole other dimension to the song) and I'm disappointed that they don't have any other songs with saxophone in them. And I still like the Gandalf version of Hang On to a Dream better than theirs. Nevertheless, this album is a great hidden gem from the hippie era and it's too bad the band was so obscure and short lived.

The Art Of Lovin' 1968 album is, in my opinion, definitely in the top 5 on the Mainstream label, next to Jelly Bean Bandits, Stone Circus, Tangerine Zoo & Lincoln Street Exit. Thoroughly enjoyable album with solid songwriting from Paul Applebaum and the wonderful vocals of Gail Winnick, which reminds me of Spanky and Our Gang, but with more splashes of pop psych and better hooks! EVERY song is worth the price of admission to Paul's Circus, especially "Daily Prayer". I would have loved a 2nd album by this band, but sadly it never happened.
