Review by Erik Fors-Andrée

Art Blakey With The Jazz Messengers is a classic jazz album that features the legendary Art Blakey and his band, The Jazz Messengers, along with guest musicians Donald Byrd, Horace Silver, and Jackie McLean. This album is a must-have for any jazz enthusiast, as it showcases some of the finest musicianship and improvisation in the genre.

The album opens with "Infra-Rae," a fast-paced tune that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The musicians work together seamlessly, each taking turns to shine with their solos. The album also features some slower, more reflective pieces such as "Nica's Dream" and "When Your Lover Has Gone," which showcase the band's versatility and ability to evoke emotion through their music.

Donald Byrd's trumpet playing is a standout feature of the album, adding a bright and energetic sound to the mix. Horace Silver's piano playing is also noteworthy, providing a solid foundation for the other musicians to build upon. Jackie McLean's alto saxophone adds a touch of soulfulness to the album, rounding out the sound of the band.

About Art Blakey With The Jazz Messengers Feat Donald Byrd, Horace Silver Jackie McLean

Archetypal hard-bop group of the late 1950s, most date their origin to 1954 or '55 when the first recordings credited to the band appeared. Playing a driving, aggressive extension of bop with pronounced blues roots, the group continued until Blakey's death in 1990. The name Jazz Messengers had been used by earlier, but when and Blakey began working together in the early 1950's the name had been dormant several years. The Jazz Messengers formed as a collective, nominally led by Silver or Blakey. Blakey credited Silver with reviving the Messengers name for the group. The original lineup of Blakey, Silver, , & , was relatively shortlived. By late 1956 was the remaining original member. Over the years the Jazz Messengers served as a springboard for young jazz musicians, a proving ground for young jazz talent.
